KENYA: KCCB Welcomes the move by the Government and Opposition Leaders to resolve complains about the Electoral Commission’s through Parliament

The Kenya Conference of the Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has welcomed the action taken by the Jubilee Coalition (Ruling party) and CORD Coalition (the Opposition) to jointly table a Motion in Parliament to amend the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) Act terming it as timely.

In a letter of appreciation to the Political leaders in the country for moving together to seek ways that would ensure peaceful and credible 2017 General Election, Chairman of Catholic Justice and Peace Commission (CJPC) Rt. Rev. Cornelius Korir, who is also Bishop of Eldoret Kenya, said that the move shows political maturity and respect of the constitution.

The letter which was signed on behalf of Bishop Korir by KCCB Secretary General Rev. Fr. Daniel Rono and sent to the media, further state that the Bishops’ Conference promised the leaders their continued prayers for the voice of reason to prevail as the Parliamentary Selected Committee embarks on the task ahead of them.

At the same time, they urged the public and all people of good will to support the team as they work to deliver on their mandate. They also assured Kenyans of their availability in case their contribution is needed.

CORD opposition party in the recent past organized street protests to push the IEBC commissioners out of office, a move that has been sharply resisted by the ruling Coalition Jubilee. The bone of contention has been that the opposition wants a new team to manage the 2017 polls while the ruling demand that the matter be taken to the parliament for further as prescribed in law.

The street protests has seen a clash of opposition supporters and the police, which resulted to loss of life and injuries.
