MALAWI: Prelate Concerned of Government’s Silence to Address Issues of Same-Sex Marriages

Malawi’s Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of Blantyre Catholic Archdiocese has called on members of parliament to push President Lazarus Chakwera to address Malawians on his stand on same-sex marriages.

Speaking on Sunday, October 29, at St. John the Baptist Lirangwe parish during the 50-year celebration of the Comboni missionaries in Malawi and Zambia, Archbishop Msusa said that legislators should utilize their upcoming meeting to ask the president to make his stand known amid his quietness on the matter.

He was speaking in reference to what Daniel Comboni, founder of Comboni Missionaries, was advocating for in denying evil forces concur Africa but allowing Godly powers to rule.

He cited same-sex marriages as one of the critical issues that need to be denied at all costs by everyone but, unfortunately, it is surprising to note that after the efforts by Faith leaders, President Chakwera seems to pay a deaf ear to the concerns.

While turning to one of the legislators who attended the celebration, Hon. Francis Phiso of Blantyre North Constituency, the Archbishop said, “Tell the President to be clear that as Malawians we strongly deny these evil unions. Do not discuss raising your salaries. Discuss pertinent issues like these.”

He added, “Malawians are suffering. You also need to discuss how best to help them.”

In an interview after the Eucharistic celebration, Phiso who is a member of the Catholic Church said he is ready to protect both his belief and the Church’s stand on the issue while also lobbying for other members to deny the legalization of same-sex marriages.

In July this year, faith leaders including the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) held peaceful demonstrations to safeguard marriage life, family, and human sexuality while condemning same-sex marriages saying such acts are against God’s will.
